Kate Winslet's Bafta pledge
Mortified by headlines she received for performances at previous awards-giving ceremonies – "Get a grip, love," "You're embarrassing us" and "It's celebrity big blubber" – Kate Winslet assures me there will be no theatrics from her at the Baftas. "There will be no tears," she told me at the Lancôme pre-Bafta party in association with Harper's Bazaar at the St Martin's Lane Hotel. "This year I can just relax and enjoy watching everyone else get nervous and appreciate their delight when they collect their awards." After I disclosed in January that her husband Sam Mendes will direct the next James Bond film, I asked her if she would prefer to play the heroine or the villain. "That is a very clever question," she laughed. "But I am not going to answer it." Also at the party was the Harry Potter star Bonnie Wright, 19, who has lately owned up to a relationship with Jamie Campbell Bower, the actor. She said her Potter co-stars like him. "I wouldn't say they have vetted him, but they do approve of him. We keep an eye out for each other."
